Amazon Fire HD 10 (2019) Tablet Review
Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet Review – Our Score is 8.2 of 10
Zippy, with a big screen and big picture, the 9th generation Fire 10 is the king of the Amazon Fire Tablets. Our team purchased the Fire 7, Fire HD 8, and this big daddy for testing. The Fire 10 is much better than the 7 in all categories and better than the 8 in speed and of course screen size. The 10 is on the larger side of the tablet world. It works great on the treadmill; it may be a bit much for small hands.
The features include Dolby Atmos sound, hands-free with Alexa, and Show Mode (full-screen Alexa experience). Our team uses this as our off-grid tech (no phone rings, binky-bonks, timers, etc.)
It can connect with apps to the world, but we forget to use those most of the time. The Silk browser is good enough; it streams and reads great and games very well. For the price, this is an excellent choice for a fun media device for yourself or a gift.
The Alexa World
If you don’t know, you may be better off. If you are ready to open this world, the Fire HD 10 owns Alexa – even when the tablet screen is asleep on standby, because that isn’t creepy at all.
Its also designed for kids with:
- An almost indestructible case sold separately to protect it from the minions
- FreeTime is a pre-installed APP which allows for kid profiles on content, time, etc.
Introduction to the Fire Tablets:
- Easy menus
- The settings are clean and easy
- Parental controls
- You don’t need to be a Prime Member, but it does make a difference
- The Fire is for media consumption; the Kindle is for reading
- They don’t have the computing power for all games
This tablet is a great way to access the Amazon multi-media universe. Reading, watching movies, listing to music, or interfacing with the news is seamless and enjoyable. The more a user is immersed in this ecosystem, the better the experience with the Fire tablet series. Running through the on-board apps is clean and speedy with a big app store for more.
It does not work with the old Fire Docking Station, and there is no docking station currently available. The FIRE is not for Google Play without a workaround. The on-board Silk browser is just adequate.
The Fire HD 10 2019 release is the 9th generation tablet from Amazon. This tablet is a step above the 8 with a better picture and processor with an upgrade in RAM. These differences are noticeable, and our recommendation is to purchase the 10 over the 8 if size is not critical.
- Alexa enabled
- High definition resolution
- Decent external speakers
- Memory up to 512 GB
- Dual cameras with HD recording
- 12 Hour battery life
- Google play requires side loading
- Surfaces hold smudges
- The unit is large for one hand
The performance versus price is high. We haven’t found anything yet that doesn’t perform as we expected. So, we are going to recommend this, or the 8 if you want a little smaller unit.

Setting up the Fire HD 10
The set-up is quick and not difficult.
The box contains a Fire HD 10 Tablet, a quick start guide, some safety instructions, and a 9W charger with 36″ USB 2.0 cord with micro-B connector.
There is an option to pre-connect to your Amazon account to simplify the set-up process. We used this service for the three fires we ordered and tested. Set-up is around 30 minutes to enter data and get through all the offer screens and download the new updates. I thought there could be fewer offers during this process.
Frustration-Free Setup – Check the link for details when ordering. This set-up works by using helper devices to connect to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. If you are a privacy nut, read this to see what you are enabling.
What is the Size?
10.3″ x 6.3″ x 0.4″ (262 mm x 159 mm x 9.8 mm)
This unit feels too big for a single hand. A pop-up or two hands is a better route to go.
Weight – 17.8 oz (504 g) – Actual size and weight may vary by configuration and manufacturing process.
Is the HD Display good?
Yes, colors from different angles are clean with decent blacks and a healthy color range.
The screen is a 10.1″ high definition touchscreen; 1920 x 1200 resolution at 224 PPI, HD video playback, with IPS (in-plane switching) technology and advanced polarizing filter.
IPS – A technology for liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). IPS creates clear images with vibrant colors to see the picture from all angles. It reduces touch marks on the screen.
A Blue Shade setting with a brightness reduction and color adjustment helps reduce this light. It also allows for automated scheduling.
Fire HD 10 Storage
32 GB (25.3 GB available to user) or 64 GB (55.8 GB available to user) of internal storage. Add a microSD card for up to 512 GB of additional storage. Some apps may require that they install on internal storage. App or feature updates may impact available storage.
External Additional Storage
You can add a microSD card for up to 512 GB of additional storage. Typical prices for the 512 GB cards are $35 and up. You can get a 128 GB for around $20, which is 8X the on-board memory. Some apps may require installation on internal storage, and features updates may impact the available room.
Tip on Optimizing Storage
- Open Settings then select storage.
- Remove content that is not being used by selecting Archive Now under 1-tap Archive.
Note: Amazon purchased content automatically saves to the Cloud. Removing it from your device does not delete it from your Amazon account.
The reported life is 12 hours. This reported battery life matches our testing. With all devices, it depends on what you are doing.
Fully charges in approximately 4 hours using the USB-C cable and 9W power adapter included in the box. About 3 hours with 15W power adapter and Type C to C cable (adapter and cable sold separately).

Parental controls allow for restricted purchasing, content types, web browsing, and access to other features. Access to Alexa is blocked when parental controls are enabled.
